WWF Thailand set to mobilize climate action through Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP)

WWF Thailand, together with the International Climate Initiative (IKI) project under the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), recently convened the kick-off meeting and workshop on Sustainable Consumption and Production in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines (“SCP TIP”) on July 4 2017 at the Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok, Thailand.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) on an ambitious regional response to climate change, the three-year SCP-TIP project aims to support the project partner countries’ implementation of the SCP principle across key stakeholders as a means to develop concrete climate strategies.

Through an initiative to bolster resilient efforts under WWF Germany’s leadership, the conference constitutes the beginning mark for further exchange on reducing carbon emissions; bringing  together representatives of supporting government ministries,  WWF Country partners (WWF Thailand, WWF Indonesia and WWF Philippines), civil society organizations, private sectors, intergovernmental and the UN system as well as environmental and nature conservation advocates to raise political momentum on the climate policy landscape.     
    
Aligned with the United Nations’ 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production patterns (10YFP), the project will provide tailored assistance to varying country-specific thematic priorities in the pilot countries. Activities in Thailand focus on the agricultural and forestry sector in spurring mitigation strategies, with specific focus on the supply chain of maize and food production. Indonesia similarly looks towards the agricultural sector, but with emphasis on palm-oil production. In the Philippines, the project emphasizes on harnessing low emission strategies on the tourism sector within the food service industry.     
         
WWF-Thailand Country Director Mrs. Yowalak Thiarachow, in her welcome speech, supported the vision of the project, saying that critical initiatives to galvanize transformative action need be uptake by the nation; government or consumers, individually or in partnership, to meet the very core objectives of the project.

Highlighting on strategic alignment and implementation of the SCP principle in climate policies, Director of Sustainable Consumer Protection, Product-related Environmental Protection; German Federal Ministry for the Environment Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, Dr. Ulf Jaeckel reaffirms the need to make decisions based on a long-term cooperative, global vision in order to reach the agreed policy outcome.

Acknowledging the need for practice-oriented emissions reduction policy, Director of Agriculture and Land Use Change, WWF Germany, Ms. Martina Fleckenstein, further underlined the International Climate Initiative (IKI), agreeing on inclusivity and international ownership, alongside the need to spurring green growth on a local level.
“This project does not only depend on the level of commitment towards climate change between key stakeholders, but also on sharing and disseminating the lessons learnt.”

Dr. Buntoon Sethasiroj, Representative of the National Administration and National Reform Framework of Natural Resources Management pointed towards the Thai Government Policy Framework for Natural resources and Environmental Management, where synergies under different country contexts in the convergence of ideas and proposals can potentially yield benefits across the United Nation’s 2013 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In an ensuing discussion with United Nations Environment of Asia Pacific (UNEP) members, Environmentalist, Mr. Worapon Mathurosmatanee from Climate Change Management and Coordination Division, Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, shared examples of developmental strategies on impact reduction for Thailand in the global warming arena.

Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Memon, Regional Coordinator for Resource Efficiency of United Nations Environment Asia Pacific (UNEP) further stresses on the SCP principle, pointing towards an economically viable framework in order for the project to become successful.   

Concluding the event, WWF Thailand Conservation Programme Mananger, Mr. Gordon Congdon, believes that WWF Thailand is well position to champion thought leadership in a national cooperation call for sustainable consumption and production in the face of climate change.
WWF Thailand looks forward to working with the IKI project and its network of partners.

Outcomes and actions
The kick-off meeting followed by a five-day workshop will result in a regional call for action towards climate change by WWF Thailand and its key country WWF partners. Within the next six months, WWF Thailand plans to conduct an analysis of food production system, with a focus on maize as a core case study.  The project will then aim at promoting of low carbon sustainable agricultural models for farms and forest  grounds in Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand) using sustainability standard to manage their supply chains. WWF Thailand also plans to map social development as the key pillar of sustainable agriculture – touching on the value of indigenous knowledge systems and gender equity.
