Bangkok, Thailand, 30th July, ‘Farm and Folk Festival’:
WWF-Thailand has launched their latest consumer campaign “Eat Better”, an awareness-raising initiative to ramp up social momentum towards sustainable food system through the promotion of responsible consumption for consumers.  To inspire and educate consumer on the need to adopt sustainable consumption and greener lifestyles, the year-long campaign was launched under the collaboration between WWF-Thailand and other civil society organizations.  

The workshop saw a knowledge and dialogue exchange session on the interlinkages between sustainable consumption and environmental conservation from four key speakers, namely: Mr. Jarongsak (Satang) Rongdech, Producer and Presenter of “Ban Thung Show”, Thai PBS Channel; Mr.  Nakorn Limpacuptathavon (also known as “The Vegetable Prince”), founder of the Vegetable Prince Urban Agriculture Research Center; Ms. Manita Wiwatsetachai, founder of Vegetable Done Social Enterprise; Mr. Thitipong Laungarunlerd, founder of E-commerce organic product store, Blue Basket and; Ms. Kingkorn Narintaraku, Deputy Director of BioThai Foundation, a community organization supporting biodiversity conservation.

Following the talk forum, a biowaste conversion and composting workshop was also conducted, where participants were invited to manage food waste through composting for soil restoration.

The “Eat Better” campaign is an awareness-raising initiative to promote sustainable consumption and production through the adoption of a renewed mindset along the fork-to-farm continuum for a sustainable food supply chain, where producers are invited to rethink agriculture, with consumers giving thought to the value of food and its production. “Giving thought and engaging in green consumerism should be at the forefront of efforts towards a sustainable food system,” says Mr. Ply Pirom, Project Manager of Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), WWF-Thailand.

“Food is an essential part of everyone’s lives. It pervades our socio-cultural and economic development aspect of human life. Given the diverse and complex outreach of food, everyone is involved in the food conversation. At present, with current consumption and production patterns, we are witnessing significant environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity degradation, increased air pollution, loss of forest areas. As consumers, I believe that we are empowered in our own actions towards achieving a sustainable food system for the health of the planet.”

Mr. Jarongsak (Satang) Rongdech, Producer and Presenter of “Ban Thung Show”, Thai PBS Channel, support the vision of the campaign when it comes to recognizing the consumption and production value of local food produce. “A single dish can tell us so much about the remarkable diversity of ecosystems and state of biodiversity. Unlike today, where a lot of our food knowledge derives from scientific researches, many in the past have relied on traditional ecological knowledge and wisdom on which to draw an understanding of, and, almost intimate relationship, with nature.”

Acknowledging his happiness in seeing Thai consumers increasingly purchasing healthy and environmentally-sustainable produce from mindful producers, Mr. Thitipong Laungarunlerd, founder of E-commerce organic product store, Blue Basket, comments on wanting to see sustainable eating go mainstream.

Mr.  Nakorn Limpacuptathavon (also known as “The Vegetable Prince”), founder of the Vegetable Prince Urban Agriculture Research Center, stresses the importance of sustainable agricultural methods. “To engage in farm work, also means engaging with nature. A lot of my agriculture knowledge was mostly derived from my interaction with nature itself. I believe that doing good for the world does you good.”

Through a year of online and offline activities, the SCP project under WWF-Thailand aims to mobilize citizens and civil society organizations alike to picture a world where responsible consumption and environmental preservation is a reality.
