ASEAN Sustainable Business Forum & Expo (ASBF) 2019
5 June 2019, The Siam Society under Royal Patronage, Bangkok:WWF-Thailand, in partnership with the Agricultural and Food Marketing Association for Asia and the Pacific (AFMA) and Sustainable Agro Food Platform, shared their vision on the importance of sustainable consumption and production and showcased sustainable modalities towards sustainable development at the ASEAN Sustainable Business Forum & Expo (ASBF) 2019 on June 5th, 2019, at the Siam Society under Royal Patronage.
With the theme on sustainable development, the regional forum focused on business engagements and private sector-led sustainable agricultural and food models for the Asia-Pacific region, bringing together policy-makers, leading academia, civil society organizations and partners on sustainability. Panel discussions were anchored on establishing sustainable food value chains from producers to end consumers.
Addressing the importance of agriculture and food industries, Ply Pirom, Project Manager of the Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) project at WWF-Thailand presented the Forest and Landscape Reforestation (FLR349); showcasing the project’s progresses and successes on agricultural sustainability, from policy strategies to implementation in accordance with key sustainable development goals’ indicators. Based on the agroforestry strategy “Three Forests, Four Benefits” under His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s “Sufficiency Economy Philosophy,” the program serves as a model for the restoration and protection of degraded headwater ecosystems and the eradication of social inequality in project sites, Chiang Mai and Nan provinces, Northern Thailand.
Through the multi-stakeholder setting, the project aims to lead the collective establishment and launch of a sustainable food platform for the promotion of a sustainable food value chain agenda across all sectors in Thailand.
Central Love the Earth “Say No to Plastic Bags” campaign
5 June 2019, Central World, Bangkok: To mark World Environmental Day, WWF-Thailand oversaw corporate giant and partner, Central Group, launch their awareness-raising campaign on plastic pollution, Central Love the Earth “Say No to Plastic Bags” at Central World as a public announcement of their aim to become Thailand’s first plastic-free retailer by the end of 2019 - cutting more than 150 million plastic bags in the process.
Their largest campaign yet to date, the one-day event saw the gathering of partner multi-stakeholders from leading policy-makers, international organizations and civil society organizations who have pledged their commitment to the agreement. With the campaign running on key pillars pertaining around sustainable consumption and environmental conservation. WWF-Thailand’s forest restoration funding program, FLR349, was showcased as key initiative and successful example of a sustainable food value chain agenda in Thailand.
With WWF-Thailand teamed up with Central Group to help promote environmental conservation and responsible consumption, the organization hopes to garner increasing awareness and knowledge on waste management and its connectivity to sustainable development.
About the FLR349
FLR349 Fund is a fund that has been developed based on the King’s Philosophy of “Three Forests, Four Benefits” and the development of a value chain which could become a model for farmers living in watershed areas. The FLR349 Fund helps farmers turn their agricultural operation from forest-encroaching mono-agriculture with intensive use of chemicals into the “Three Forests, Four Benefits” agricultural system which helps to restore the environment by stopping destruction of top soil. Farmers learn to grow perennial trees, fruit trees, vegetables and herbs in a mixed system that is sustainable, and which replenishes the soil. Such plantations function like carbon sinks and water reservoirs which make possible the production of diverse and safe foods for consumption. It helps to empower farmers and their community, helps to reduce their living expenses, and helps to keep them healthy. As a result, they can break free from the endless cycle of debt that has trapped many farmers in in our current food system. This system is consistent with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
